Helping A Veteran Family Experiencing Homelessness

St. Michael's Veterans Services

The Washington family were a veteran family experiencing homelessness. The St. Michael’s Veteran Services team worked with them to get stable housing, and helped the family move into their new home in March 2024.

Context: Husband and wife had been homeless for 9 months. The couple have two older daughters (living independently from parents). Husband is a veteran. They had been sleeping in a car for months. SMVS team helped get this family stable housing in an apartment. They also provided furniture and house-in- a box kits with kitchen supplies, bedding, and more. The house-in-a-box kits were donated by CCCTX partner Ladies of Charity- Lake Travis.

Quotes from Mrs. Washington on move-in day

It’s been a long 9 months for us. I was thinking, “are we really going to be homeless, sleeping in a car and motels for an entire year?”

When our family came [to our new apartment] to see us today, they said, “y’all are so happy now!”

[Speaking to SMVS team:] Y’all are a bunch of angels to us. There were times when I was really depressed, and my case manager helped me stay optimistic. We were told no so many times before we came to Catholic Charities. To have Maria [our case manager] come in with a positive attitude was a gamechanger for us. Thank you so so much.
